For the overwhelming majority of South Africans, gambling is harmless recreational fun. Most people know how much money and time they can afford to spend on gambling. It does not affect their family or work life, and they don't get into financial difficulty. However for a small portion of people, gambling does become a problem. Anyone can become a problem gambler, regardless of age, religion, education, economic status or moral character, just as some people have the tendency to develop addictive problems with alcohol and other drugs.
